Groupon offers many great deals on many different products and services.
Not just Groupon but many other 'deal' websites such as Living Social and Travel Zoo offer discounts on items that you may find for a 'cheap' price.
While there are certainly many reputable companies, products, services on those types of websites we do not use them.
Here is why...
In the Wine Tour industry you will get what you pay for. When you see a 'deal' for a 'wine tour' on Groupon or other deal sites the reality is it's not much of a deal at all.
For example you will see a wine tour advertised on Groupon for $89.00/person and it will say it's a $178.00 value (50% off)
The reality is there has never been a wine tour that costs $178.00 a person. The companies just give a 'retail' value and Groupon and other sites will say it is 50% off to make it look appealing to the consumer.
You might think it is still a good price. Which it may be. However what happens is Groupon and other deal sites will take up to 50% of that $89.00 for themselves leaving the wine tour company with $45.00 of 'profit'.
Your wine tour includes all of the tastings, lunches, champagne on board your bus, tour guides, and many other out of pocket expenses that Groupon and other deal sites don't help out with.
So at the end of the day the deal sites such as Groupon will leave the business owners either barely breaking even or in many cases losing money.
The end result of all of this is a bad user experience as the companies have to nickel and dime things just to make ends meet to be able to use Groupon and other deal sites.
Long story short we have not ever used Groupon or any other deal sites. If you see a 'deal' on Groupon or other deal sites read the fine print. In many cases you are better off calling the wine tour company directly and seeing if they will honor the Groupon price.
